New Century Trust is now Gender Justice Fund
Over a century after it was first established, New Century Trust is changing its name to Gender Justice Fund. This change is the culmination of a few years of evolution of the organization and deep thinking and planning on the part of the board. In addition to the name change, we have a new mission statement that better reflects our work and our goals: Gender Justice Fund fights to end all forms of gender-based oppression through trust-based philanthropy and by amplifying community-led systems change.
For us, gender justice is the recognition of the systems of misogyny and patriarchy that have historically oppressed women, non-binary, gender nonconforming, and LGBTQ individuals purely on the basis of their gender or identity. It is a demand for accountability and undoing of harm. It is the recognition that individuals at the intersection of gender and other marginalized identities require varying levels of recompense. It is the understanding that solutions lie in policy and systems change, as well as in creating frameworks for repair, resolution, and healing.
We will be centering all our funding, convening, and advocacy around this idea going forward. I invite you to learn more about the organization's new direction by visiting our website at www.genderjusticephilly.org. We will also be hosting a virtual celebration of our new name on social media all this week. Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter or follow the hashtag #genderjusticephilly on any platform to see art commissioned by local artists and some of our favorite gender justice warriors - including Councilmembers Helen Gym and Kendra Brooks, and the ACLU's Amber Hikes and Reggie Shuford - sharing what gender justice means to them. It is my distinct honor and privilege to be leading this organization during this pivotal time, and I hope you will join us for the journey ahead.
